Immigrants Rights in the Social Context
Scenario 1
You are counsel for a local school district. The School Board is very frustrated because they are not getting support from the State for additional teachers and resources. The population of the school district has grown by 50% over the last 10 years and the additional resources in real dollar terms has only increased by 5% in this same period. There are many school board members who attribute the increase in enrollment to the large influx of foreigners some of whom are working for the local meat packing plant and others who are doing service jobs in the area. The school board calls you in and wants you to advise them of what they can do to control the influx of students. They are looking for both legal and creative strategies at dealing with the problem that they are facing. Advise the School board on the available options.
Scenario 2
You work for a non-profit that assists day-laborers and they have encountered some serious problems from groups in the community believe that the immigration problem has gotten out of control. They have begun to harass people who are on street corners waiting to be picked up for work. Some have gone as far as to perform "citizens arrests" on these individuals and then to deliver them either to the local sherriff or ICE officicals? How would you advise the day laborers. If you were brought in by the anti-immigrant groups how would you advise them about what they were
doing?
